DES MOINES — Highline Community College came into this NWAACC Western Division softball doubleheader on Wednesday atop the division standings and as the reigning division champions.
Grays Harbor College left at the end of the day with a satisfying sweep of the Thunderbirds with just nine players available.
Pitcher Jill Johnson combined for 22 strikeouts and the Chokers’ bats were swinging as GHC registered a 5-1 and 6-0 doubleheader sweep at Highline.
“We only played with nine players, so it is nice to get a sweep there with Highline as the reigning division champs,” GHC head coach Tom Sutera said. “We really came together a a team and played well. Jill pitched very well today.”
Amanda Anderson drove in three runs and Shannon Glenn two runs to power the GHC (5-1, 8-11) offense. Anderson, Glenn and Kaisha Hollenbeck each had two hits in the opener, including Anderson’s two-run home run to center field in the first inning.
In the nightcap, Jasmine Gilmore slugged a two-run home run to center field during a three-run fifth inning to highlight the Chokers’ offensive output. Johnson also drove in two runs, with Erica Rydman slugging two hits, including a double.
Sutera cited Hollenbeck for her work at shortstop.

Aberdeen proved strong in the doubles matches, but visiting Centralia swept the singles to claim this Evergreen 2A match at Sam Benn Courts on Wednesday.
The Bobcats’ top-two doubles teams — Rachael Schermer-Ali Morris and Jamie Peterson-Alex Schultz — earned straight-set wins on the day. The Tigers, however, had to fight a bit in the second and third singles matches to secure the sweep and the match win.
“This being our sixth match of the season, I can see the fire and intensity from the varsity players,” AHS head coach Ashley Kohlmeier said. “The matches we lost were close and the girls fought hard for every point. I see a lot of improvement in that from this team.”
Today, Aberdeen will host Black Hills in a makeup match.
