Twin Harborites win three titles at Shelton

SHELTON — An outstanding day for Hoquiam’s tracksters at the Shelton Invitational almost became historic.

Winning two event titles, the Grizzlies barely missed capturing the boys team title at the 53rd annual Shelton Invitational on Saturday.

Hoquiam’s Cole Smith, in the boys high jump and Raymond’s Aiysha Garcia, in the girls frosh-soph shot put, claimed individual championships. Hoquiam’s boys 4x100-meter relay team also prevailed.

The reigning state 1A boys champions, the Grizzlies actually entered the concluding 4x400-meter relay leading this prestigious all-classification meet with 44 points.

Class 4A South Kitsap, needing at least a third-place finish to overtake them, won the mile relay to take team honors with 49 points. Central Kitsap, which ran second in that race, tied Hoquiam for second with 44.

“It was a great placing for the guys to place that high in a meet of that size and that caliber,” Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan said.

Two-time state 1A champion Smith cleared 6-7 in windy conditions to take the high jump. Despite the presence of a number of top jumpers, no one else bettered 6-2.

“That’s the benefit of us competing where we do at home,” Pelan said. “Some kids can’t handle (the wind).”

Seeded second entering the meet, Hoquiam’s sprint relay team of Paul Girts, Tyler White, Devin Kelly and Nolan Hoiness won with surprising ease in 43:08. A stiff headwind for runners coming down the home stretch impacted times in the one-lap races.

“We’re running well right now, got our handoffs right,” Pelan noted. “We actually won by 10-15 meters.”

Garcia threw 33-3, a personal best by about a foot, to take the girls frosh-soph shot.

“It was a big-meet type stage,” Raymond coach Mike Tully said. “To be able to step up and do that well was really impressive.”

North Beach’s Crystal Lynch wound up second in the girls shot and discus to help the Hyaks tie for 14th, the best of any Harbor team, in the girls team standings.

Smith also placed second in the boys javelin with a throw of 173-10. Other Twin Harbors runners-up included Hoquiam’s Devin Kelly (boys 200) and Olivia Rose (girls triple jump), Montesano’s Tanner Birdsall (boys frosh-soph 100) and Myranda Floch (girls frosh-soph 400) and Taholah’s Jon Law (boys frosh-soph shot).

Kelly’s showing represented something of a breakout performance for the rapidly improving Grizzly junior. He was beaten only by Marcus Chambers of Tacoma’s Foss High School.

Area third-place finishers included Aberdeen’s Poli Baltazar (boys 3,200) and Shayna Wilson (girls javelin), Raymond’s Ally Phansisay (boys triple jump), North Beach’s Caleb Bridge (boys discus), Hoquiam’s Rose (girls frosh-soph 100) and Montesano’s Gabrielle Rudolph (girls 3,200) and Kaitlyn Bradley (girls frosh-soph shot).

“I thought we had really good performances, particularly with the competition we had,” Monte girls coach Doug Schupbach said.

Aberdeen took only four competitors and all finished ninth or better. The top eight in each event earned points.

Raymond’s Tully cited the performance of Andrew Hamilton, who established a career best in the boys shot.
