TUMWATER — Improved ball-handling and clutch foul shooting produced a 26-point turnaround for Aberdeen’s boys in their season series with Black Hills.
Canning 13-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter, the Bobcats notched their second consecutive Evergreen 2A Conference victory by edging Black Hills, 63-58, on Tuesday night at Tumwater.
Addam Follett scored 21 points and Cole Edwards went 10-for-10 from the foul line as the Bobcats avenged a 55-34 home-court loss to the Wolves last month.
The foul-filled rematch (the teams combined for 61 free throws) was, amazingly, tied after each of the first three quarters. The Bobcats (2-5, 5-8) edged in front early in the fourth quarter and iced it from the foul line.
Edwards, who scored 14 points, made all six of his free throws in the final stanza, while Follett and Aaron Taylor also made clutch foul shots down the stretch.
Plagued by turnovers for much of the season, Aberdeen committed only nine in this one.
Winning coach Leonard Barnes said his bench provided important contributions. Taylor was cited for an outstanding overall effort while playing extended minutes in the second half. Chandler Craig and Payton Campbell were also credited with strong performances.
“This win typified a truly awesome team effort,” Barnes said. “We made the free throws and our kids ground it out on the defensive end.”
Edwards also handed out five assists. Lorenzo Ontiveros led Aberdeen rebounders with six.
The Bobcats, who play three home games next week, travel to Elma for 5 p.m. contest Saturday.
