CHEHALIS — An Aberdeen upset bid vanished in a flurry of Chehalis free throws.
The Bearcats scored heavily from the foul line in the second half for a 66-57 win over the Bobcats in an Evergreen 2A Conference boys basketball game Friday night at Chehalis.
Adam Schwarz scored 21 points and Tanner Gueller added 13 points for the Bearcats (3-0, 5-4).
Three Bobcats scored in double figures, with Addam Follett tallying a team-high 15 points. Aberdeen received good production from its posts, with Jacob Black scoring 14 points and Lorenzo Ontiveros adding 10.
Down 31-27 at the half, Aberdeen (0-2, 3-4) rallied to take a 44-41 lead into the fourth quarter. Regaining the lead with about five minutes remaining, however, the Bearcats, pulled away from the foul line. They hit 12 of 17 free throws in the final period.
“That was the game,” Bobcat coach Leonard Barnes said. “It was very frustrating.”
Barnes, however, rated his own team’s performance as its best of the season.
“This is the best we’ve executed,” he asserted. “They executed the game plan against a very good team. We worked our tails off defensively. It was a complete game, we just couldn’t finish it.
Black grabbed six rebounds, while Veek Cheema handed out seven assists for the Bobcats. Cole Edwards (who had four steals) and Austin Floch were credited with excellent defense.
The Bobcats remain on the road at Tumwater on Tuesday.
