Choker men take care of the ball and Titans

TACOMA — Improved ball-handling has translated into better fortunes for the Grays Harbor College men.

Committing only four turnovers in the second half, the Chokers completed a season sweep of Tacoma Community College, 79-71, in an NWAACC Western Division men’s basketball game Saturday at Tacoma.

Bryan McGriff scored 26 points to lead a quartet of double-figure scorers for the Chokers (4-5, 7-11). Tim Straghter added 13 points, while Cameron Ladson and Hoquiam’s Bryan Irion added 12 points each.

The Chokers enjoyed a significant advantage in field-goal shooting and were aided by Tacoma’s 14-of-28 performance from the foul line. Grays Harbor coach Jordan Altman, however, credited his team’s ball-handling with providing the difference. The Chokers had only 13 turnovers for the contest.

“Down the stretch, we did a really good job of controlling the ball,” Altman said. “The last two games, in particular, I can’t think of too many possessions where we didn’t take care of the ball.”

Interestingly, Tacoma had even fewer miscues in a mistake-free game. The Titans committed only nine turnovers.

The game featured six ties and eight lead changes, but the Chokers led for almost the entire second half.

Point guard Ladson actually paced the Chokers in rebounding with nine. McGriff, meanwhile, hit 11 of 18 field-goal attempts.

Marquis Blackwell topped Tacoma with 20 points.

The Chokers return home Wednesday to face Centralia.
