Defense keys a big first half for Raymond in win over Tenino

TENINO — Powered by its defense and a balanced scoring attack, Raymond took control of this non-league girls basketball game against Tenino in the first half.

Forcing turnovers and getting easy baskets out of them, the Seagulls walked into the halftime locker room with a 42-12 lead and cruised to a 61-28 victory over the Beavers on Thursday night.

Four Raymond (2-1) players finished in double-digit scoring, led by 14 points each from Aiysha Garcia and Alex Gilbert. Freshman Aubree Gardner scored 13 points and Hailee Williams added 11.

“That felt pretty good,” Raymond head coach Jon Schray said of the halftime score. “I played nine freshmen tonight. I was really happy with our defense. That’s what we’ve been about this season and we took advantage of the easy layups and baskets that came out of it. This was a fun game, everyone played and contributed.”

Gardner and Garcia pulled down eight rebounds, Williams added seven rebounds and six assists and Garcia swiped three steals. Coach Schray cited Garcia, at 5-foot-8, for her defensive work on Tenino’s 6-2 post, Taylor Tibbetts, who led the Beavers with eight points.

On Saturday, Raymond begins Pacific League play when it hosts Ocosta.
