Elma girls hand state-ranked Rochester its first loss of the season

ROCHESTER — Rochester entered this Evergreen 1A girls basketball matchup with Elma state-ranked and undefeated. By the end of Thursday’s game, the Eagles handed the Warriors their first loss.

Brooke Goldsmith led all scorers with 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and six steals as Elma secured a 57-40 victory.

The Eagles (4-1, 7-4) handled the Warriors’ pressure defense and shut down Rochester’s offense with their own pressure.

“Our defense always gets us going, but we’ve been focusing on playing tough, being strong on the ball; we went out and did that,” Elma head coach Lisa Johnson said. “They tried to press. It didn’t work. We stuck with our defense and they couldn’t score. They never got good looks at the hoop.

“It was a battle and it was a team effort,” Johnson added. “We needed that.”

Elma grabbed a 23-14 halftime lead and battled with Rochester before taking the game away in the fourth quarter.

Goldsmith was cited for her all-around game by Johnson, along with Sydney Smythe for her defense and Beth Lipska for her work off the bench.

On Wednesday, Elma returns to league play at Hoquiam.
