LACEY — Rebounding from their first defeat earlier in the title round, the Grays Harbor Bearcats captured the state USSSA U-12 Class C softball championship on Sunday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.
Sadee Huckleberry racked up three hits and three RBIs as the Bearcats edged the Duval Redhawks, 5-3, in the winner-take-all second championship game of the double-elimination tournament.
The Redhawks had topped the previously unbeaten Bearcats, 10-5, in the first game of the title round.
Emily Newberry contributed two hits and outstanding defense at second base for the Bearcats in the second championship game. Glory Grubb, Stephanie Stopson, K.C. Powell and Ryder Heikkila also had hits for Grays Harbor, which took a permanent lead in the third inning.
Pitching standout Powell was selected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Stopson delivered an inside-the-park home run for the Bearcats in the first game of the title round. Huckleberry, Grubb and Ryann Raffelson had two hits apiece for Grays Harbor, which lost that contest despite outhitting the Redhawks.
Team members included Grubb, Stopson, Huckleberry, Powell, Newberry, Heikkila, Raffelson, McKenna Fletcher, Lucy Aronson, Nicole “Pickle” McGuire and Savannah Chandler.
