Grays Harbor Pro-Am kicks off today

Reigning Washington State Open champion John Cassidy will return to defend his championship in the 56th annual Grays Harbor Pro-Am Golf Tournament this weekend at Grays Harbor Country Club.

The 36-hole tournament begins today, with the final round scheduled for Sunday. Shotgun starts are planned for 7:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. both days.

A native of Yelm who is an assistant pro at the Alderbrook Golf and Yacht Club on Hood Canal, Cassidy established a tournament record in last year’s Pro-Am with a 128 total.

He could wind up continuing last year’s duel with Shane Prante of Olympia. Prante, whose parents are Elma High School graduates, placed second in 2013 despite also shattering the previous Pro-Am record with a 129 total.

Cassidy is one of seven former champions in the fields. That includes Tacoma pro Chris Griffin, who will be seeking a record fifth Pro-Am title.

Other past champions include Ronnie Espedal and Curt Zander, both of Ocean Shores, pros Tom Sovay and Mark Olson and amateur Scotty Scott.

Jon McCaslin of Lacey, last year’s low amateur, is also entered.

The field of 14 pros and 42 amateurs is considerably smaller than in previous years, which tourney officials attributed primarily to conflicting commitments.
