Grizzlies set up another showdown with Elma

CASTLE ROCK — Once Hoquiam found its batting stroke, the Grizzlies never lost it on Tuesday.

Scoring in every inning, the Grizzlies crushed Castle Rock, 18-4, to stay alive in the District IV Class 1A Baseball Tournament at Castle Rock.

State poll leader Woodland blanked Hoquiam, 7-0, earlier in the day.

The split sets up a fourth meeting between Hoquiam (14-7) and rival Elma in a winner-to-regional, loser-out contest scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Friday at Castle Rock. The winner of that game will also play a regional seeding game on Saturday.

Blake Kelly hammered out four hits, while Jerod Steen contributed three hits and Josh Bishop four RBIs for the Grizzlies against Castle Rock.

Kolby Standstipher’s RBI single up the middle scored Kelly to break a 3-3 deadlock in the third inning.

The Grizzlies then settled matters with a seven-run fifth highlighted by Bishop’s two-run double.

Kyle Standstipher, with relief help from Skyler Jump and Jesiah Bretz, was the winning pitcher. Tristan Stutesman was cited for an acrobatic defensive play at third base.

“The second game, we hit the ball like we could,” Hoquiam coach Steve Jump said. “In fact, we hit the ball in the first game, we came up a little short.”

The Grizzlies owned a 7-6 advantage in hits against Woodland. Austin Holcomb, however, drove in three runs to back the complete-game pitching of Trevor Huddleston.

“We kind of squandered some opportunities,” Coach Jump said. “Woodland is a solid team and made no mistakes.”

Steen and Kelly had two hits apiece for the Grizzlies against Woodland.
