Grizzlies split with Rochester

ROCHESTER — A quick tempo in the middle two quarters and control of the boards powered Hoquiam’s boys past Rochester, 70-44, in Evergreen 1A League basketball play on Friday at Rochester.

Jerod Steen led all Grizzlies scorers with 17 points and five assists. Camden Anderson pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for the Grizzlies (3-0, 4-5). Blake Kelly added 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Jack Adams and Jace Varner pulled down eight rebounds apiece.

Tyler Gedney led the Warriors with 14 points.

“We started out slow in the first quarter, but picked up the tempo in the second and third quarters,” said HHS head coach Curtis Eccles. “We were ahead by halftime and controlled the boards to extend the lead. We used a variety of defenses and got points from turnovers. It was a great team effort.”

Eccles praised Steen for his work in the middle quarters, including three 3-pointers in the third quarter.

On Tuesday, Hoquiam hosts Tenino at Hoquiam Square Garden.
