Harborites excel in Chehalis Activators track

CHEHALIS —Grays Harbor tracksters harvested plenty of gold medals in the Chehalis Activators meet on Saturday.

Harborites won 11 events Saturday and another seven Friday in the annual two-day meet.

Elma’s boys and Hoquiam’s girls each placed third in the primary team competition. Class 2A Black Hills swept team honors.

Hoquiam won the boys portion of the Friday meet, devoted to non-qualifiers for Saturday’s main event.

Elma’s Ray Stark, North Beach’s Caleb Bridge and Hoquiam’s girls sprint relay teams were among the headliners Saturday.

Stark handily won his specialty, the boys 300 hurdles, with a time of 40.24. He also edged Hoquiam’s Devin Kelly for the first time in the 100 meters, which he covered in 11.45.

Kelly later won the 200, generally considered his stronger event, with a meet-record time of 22.46.

Bridge bettered his own school record by a couple of feet in capturing the boys discus with a throw of 161-11. He also captured the shot put with a 48-10 1/2 mark.

Hoquiam’s girls 4x200-meter relay team of Brittoni Wright, Olivia Rose, Emma Skinner and Savannah Smith snapped a 33-year-old school record by some two seconds by taking that event in 1:45.8. The same quartet also won the 4x100 relay with a time of 50.5. Both were meet records and state-leading marks for the 1A classification.

The Grizzlies had to fend off tough competition from a strong Black Hills team in both events,

“We came out on fire and obliterated the record,” Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan said.

Rose also won the girls triple jump with a 35-9 1/4 mark.

Elma junior Bethany Lipska had an outstanding day, winning the girls high jump and finishing second behind Rose in the triple jump. Elma’s Tyson Nauman took the boys triple jump (43-2 1/2) and the Eagles prevailed in the boys mile relay (3:36.11).

Hoquiam’s Albert Lopez, Theresa Chapin and McKell Sansaver, Elma’s Wesley Allen, Lukas Starks and Jacob Stevens and North Beach’s Cameron Keller were among the winners in Friday’s events.

Pelan cited Kenny Huffman for runner-up finishes behind Bridge in both throwing events. Huffman’s 47-10 mark in the shot represented a significant personal best.

North Beach coach Bob Wiley commended Keller, Alex McAra and Jenna Vogler (who ran strong relay legs) for good showings.

Ocosta brought only a limited crew of performers due to conflicting commitments, but Wildcat coach Aaron Anderson noted personal-best showings from Alex Herrera in the boys javelin, Rachael Saul in the girls 300 hurdlers and Kelsey Gundersen in the girls 800 meters. Gundersen lowered her previous best time by some 10 seconds.
