Hilliard helps power HHS girls to wild doubleheader sweep

Kayla Hilliard rolled triple sevens to help Hoquiam sweep a wild softball doubleheader on Thursday.

Hilliard went 7-for-7, scored seven times, hit three homers and drove in nine runs as the Grizzlies took a pair from Rochester, 19-13 and 14-13, in Evergreen 1A League contests Thursday at John Gable Park.

The doubleheader, which included 71 hits, concluded in near-darkness.

Hilliard saved her mightiest blow for last.

With the second game tied at 11, the HHS senior hit what Grizzly coach Keith Reynvaan described as “the longest home run I’ve ever seen at Gable” to score Ashlynn Wakefield ahead of her in the top of the seventh inning (Hoquiam was the visiting team in that contest).

Bailee Bradley followed with a solo homer on the next pitch to give the Grizzlies a 14-11 lead.

That insurance run proved to be necessary when Rochester, which banged out 22 hits (21 of them singles) in the nightcap, scored twice and put the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position in the bottom of the inning. Brandi Creviston hauled in a fly to deep right field for the final out.

“Let’s just say we survived,” Reynvaan said. “It was like two heavyweight fighters going toe to toe. Neither of them could stop the other one.”

Hilliard, Bradley, Ellie Quercia and Hannah Hliboki had three hits apiece in the second game.

Down 7-0, Rochester erupted for 11 runs in the third inning to grab what proved to be a short-lived lead in the opening game. Hoquiam capitalized on two costly errors to answer with five runs in its half of the third. Bradley and Lydia LaLonde drive in the only runs for the Grizzlies in that inning.

Hilliard, who had hit a two-run homer in the second inning, added a three-run shot in the fourth.

Hliboki pitched four innings of strong relief to pick up the victory.
