Hoquiam wins double dual wrestling meet at Elma

ELMA — Utilizing its depth, Hoquiam remained unbeaten in Evergreen 1A League wrestling competition by sweeping a double dual from Elma and Montesano on Wednesday in Elma.

The Grizzlies edged the Bulldogs, 39-34, and the Eagles, 34-31.

Forks, the state’s top-ranked Class 1A team, also swept the East County teams. The Spartans downed Montesano, 44-24, and Elma, 51-25.

The Grizzlies and Spartans will meet for the league dual championship next Thursday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Hoquiam coach Fidel Sanchez acknowledged he was pleasantly surprised by Wednesday’s outcomes.

“Those were the top four teams in the league. To come away with two dual wins, that’s a good night for Grizzly wrestling,” Sanchez said.

Tahj Malone, Kenny Huffman, Shiianna Anderson and Austin Prosch scored pins for Hoquiam against Elma. Generally controlling the lighter weights, the Grizzlies were able to fill their lineup more effectively.

“We lost to their studs and we got some key wins in weight classes that we weren’t expecting,” Sanchez said.

Anderson’s victory in an all-girls match at 106 pounds might have been the key to the outcome, according to Elma coach Jason Dick.

“Fidel’s doing a great job there,” Dick said. “His kids, they battled.”

Tyson Dick, Brek McGaughy and Mario Yanez had pins for Elma.

Montesano won six of the nine contested matches against Hoquiam, but the Grizzlies collected four of the match’s five forfeits.

“And we had a few wins where we didn’t get pins,” Monte coach Jeff Klinger said. “That was probably the biggest thing that hurt us, not getting pins when we had the opportunities.”

Huffman and Jesse Velez notched pins for Hoquiam against the Bulldogs, but Sanchez credited 170-pounder Alex Valliere with registering the pivotal win when he decisioned Ben O’Brien, 8-4.

Austin Cain, Tyler Izatt and Jacob Ellefson had pins for the Bulldogs.

Montesano also fared well in contested matches against Forks, but again forfeited at four weights. Ellefson remained unbeaten for the season with a hard-fought decision win over Sebastian Morales, also a state-ranked wrestler, and Kylar Prante was also impressive in a technical fall triumph.

“”They’re good and they’re deep,” Klinger said of the Spartans. “Giving up 24 points (through forfeits) is a hard way to start. In the matches that were contested, I thought our kids wrestled pretty well. There’s a reason why we’re a tournament team, not a dual team.”

Summary information from the Elma-Forks match was unavailable but Elma’s Dick, McGaughy and Tanner Sample posted wins over tough opponents in that contest.

Sample edged Nanito Sanchez in a seesaw encounter, 5-4. Dick won by technical fall over state-ranked Javier Contreras.

Hoquiam’s boys and girls will travel to the Lakes Invitational on Saturday. Elma and Montesano will be represented by primarily junior varsity contingents at the Willapa Harbor Invitational.
