John Sand eliminated in quarterfinals of PNGA Junior

CRESWELL, Ore. — Tournament medalist John Sand of Hoquiam lost in the quarterfinals of the Pacific Northwest Junior Boys Amateur Golf Championship today at the Emerald Valley Golf & Resort in Creswell.

Sam Warkentin of Bainbridge Island eliminated Sand on the 19th hole of their quarterfinal match this morning.

Sand had trounced Scott Chu of Vancouver, B.C., 5 and 4, in his opening contest. He then topped Brian Humphreys of Washougal, 4 and 2, in the second round.

Aberdeen’s Eric Hagen also qualified for the match-play portion of the tourney, but lost his first-round match to Brett Pasula of Red Deer, Alberta, on the 19th hole.

Sand reeled off seven birdies — including four on the back nine — to fire a three-under-par 69 in his second qualifying round on Tuesday. That gave him a 36-hole total of 141 and medalist honors by two strokes over Matt Marrese of Bellevue.

The PNGA field includes players from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Canada.
