After capturing district championships the week before, Mary M. Knight’s girls and Oakville’s boys saw their basketball seasons end at regionals on Saturday.
Tulalip Heritage ran away from the Owls, 68-42, in a regional 1B girls basketball contest at Tumwater.
The Acorns fell to Shorewood Christian, 66-46, at Chehalis.
The Owls didn’t shoot nearly as well from the perimeter as they did in their district championship victory over Taholah the previous Saturday. After canning 11 three-point shots in the latter contest, they made only three (one of those long after the outcome had been decided) against Tulalip.
“When we don’t hit our outside shots, we struggle,” Knight coach Lance Valley affirmed.
The athletic Hawks, meanwhile, shot very well for most of the way (finishing at 42 percent from the field) and exhibited their superior speed in the open court.
Four Hawks scored in double figures. Adiya Jones, an agile 5-foot-9 sophomore, paced Tulalip Heritage with 19 points, two more than teammate Kaela Tyler. Katia Brown, 8-of-8 from the foul line, finished with 16.
Carlie Adsero, one of only three Knight seniors (Ashley Kiliz and Aimee Bearden were the others), turned in a strong performance with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Junior Miranda Sowls had 12 points and eight boards for the Owls (16-5).
A 12-2 run that began late in the first quarter staked Tulalip Heritage to a 23-11 lead early in the second period. The Owls cut the margin to seven on a couple of occasions — the last time on Adsero’s basket midway through the second quarter. But Brown, Jones and Tyler combined of a spurt of nine successive Hawk points that widened the margin to 21 at the midpoint of the third quarter.
Details on the Shorewood Christian-Oakville game were unavailable. The Acorns finished their season with a 15-9 record.
