The combined Lake Quinault/Wishkah Valley boys high school teams will be called the Twin Valley Wolfpack, Quinault Principal/Athletic Director Keith Samplawski announced Tuesday.
The boys teams at the two Grays Harbor Class 1B schools will combine, beginning with baseball this spring, due to declining male enrollments.
The girls teams will continue as separate entities, although Lake Quinault will not field a softball team this spring due to a shortage of players.
Wishkah will be the only school offering a track program.
The team name, mascot and school colors were determined at a combined community meeting Monday after three weeks of community and student input. The Twin Valley boys teams will wear gray and black uniforms.
The Wolfpack was chosen as the mascot from an initial list that included Elk/Logger, Sea Penguins, Sasquatches, Eagles, Bears and Wolverines. Each school narrowed the list down to two finalists, with Quinault deciding on the Wolfpack and Sasquatches and Wishkah the Wolfpack and Wolverines.
“The Sasquatches did come in second as the mascot, but it was a distant second,” Samplawski reported.
Twin Valley was selected as the team name over Lake Quinault/Wishkah Valley and North County. Gray and black was chosen over Navy blue and orange, royal blue and orange, gray and black and black and blue as team colors.
“The kids at Lake Quinault seem to be pretty happy with the choice and are looking forward to competing with Wishkah,” Samplawski said. “We’ve always had a great relationship with Wishkah and I think it will be great for both schools.”
