SOUTH BEND — Riding tremendous advantages in shooting and rebounding, South Bend stunned Hoquiam, 57-44, in a non-league girls basketball game Saturday night at Koplitz Fieldhouse.
Rielly Myers scored 15 points and Emily Sanchez and Katlyn Sawyer contributed 13 points and nine rebounds apiece for the Class 2B Indians (1-1).
Ellie Quercia paced Hoquiam (1-1) with 16 points.
The victory was particularly surprising, since Hoquiam had trounced North Mason in its season opener and the Indians were coming off a 60-31 drubbing at the hands of Wahkiakum.
On Saturday, however, the Tribe shot 51 percent from the field and owned a 50-33 rebounding advantage. The Grizzlies, meanwhile, connected on only 19-of-76 field-goal attempts and were an abysmal 4-of-19 from the foul line.
“We really were better defensively, we settled down and controlled (the tempo) of the game,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “I was real excited with the way the kids played. They set their goals and they achieved them.”
The Grizzlies committed only seven turnovers but were unable to overcome their shooting miseries.
“I think we shot the same as the temperature in the gym,” Hoquiam coach Mark Maxfield said. “We really had good looks. We just could not hit a basket. Once that started, we got a little frustrated and it just snowballed on us.”
Sanchez scored all 13 of her points in the second half and Sawyer amassed nine points in the fourth quarter. Sierra Cearns, who had eight assists, sank 4-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter as the Indians expanded what had been a five-point advantage.
Quercia also led Hoquiam rebounders with 10 and dished out three assists. Brandi Creviston had 12 points and Kelci Parker collected three steals for the Grizzlies.
South Bend will bid for a second successive victory over a Class 1A opponent when it hosts Montesano on Tuesday. Hoquiam is home against Centralia the same night.
