Aberdeen, Ocosta host mat tourneys

Twelve teams are scheduled to participate in the Aberdeen Kickoff Classic wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Chehalis, Black Hills, Washougal, Steilacoom, Klahowya, Olympic, Union, Columbia River, North Mason and Franklin Pierce are scheduled to participate in the tourney.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m., with girls and junior varsity divisions planned for approximately 11. The title round is scheduled to begin no earlier than 4 p.m.

The Ocosta Invitational tournament is also scheduled for Saturday. North Beach, Willapa Harbor, Adna, Napavine, Toledo/Winlock, Rainier, Rochester, Tacoma Baptist, Ilwaco and Knappa of Oregon will compete in the event.

This tourney is also slated to begin at 10 a.m., with the finals beginning no earlier than 3:30 p.m.

Gridiron Classic due this weekend

Tumwater will face Lynden for the state 2A football championship at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

That will be part of the six-game Gridiron Classic program this weekend. The schedule, with all games at the Tacoma Dome:

Friday

4 p.m. (Class 1B) — Neah Bay vs. Touchet. 7:30 p.m. (Class 3A) — Bellevue vs. Eastside Catholic.

Saturday

10 a.m. (Class 2A) — Tumwater vs. Lynden. 1 p.m. (Class 1A) — Mount Baker vs. Freeman. 4:30 p.m. (Class 2B) — Morton/White Pass vs. Lind-Ritzville/Sprague. 7:30 p.m. (Class 4A) — Camas vs. Chiawana.

Elma FFA Fun Run set Saturday

The Elma High School FFA is sponsoring a Fun Run on Saturday at Vance Creek Park.

The run begins at 10 a.m., with registration planned for 9:15. Proceeds from the event will benefit East Grays Harbor food banks.

Runners are asked to dress in holiday attire. Prizes will be awarded to best attire in addition to the top male and female runners.

The entry fee is $15.

Winter baseball camps planned

Youth baseball hitting and defensive baseball camps are planned for later this month at the Bishop Batting Cage adjacent to Pioneer Park in Aberdeen.

Sponsored by the Aberdeen Parks &Recreation Department, the camp will be conducted by area college baseball players home during winter vacation. It is open to boys and girls in the 8-14 age group.

The hitting camp is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 27. The defensive camp will be conducted during the same time frame Dec. 28.

The fee is $40 per camp. Each participant will receive a T-shirt.
