Another Major League Soccer rule change could be on its way: The “core player”

Goal.com dropped a pair of Major League Soccer news bombs on what had been an otherwise quiet Tuesday afternoon. First, it reported that L.A. Galaxy is in “advanced talks” with Spanish club Villarreal for Mexican star Giovani dos Santos. Secondly — and with wider-ranging implications — it reported that MLS owners are ready to approve changes to the existing salary cap rules to allow for a “core player” roster spot, essentially a fourth designated player slot for teams currently using the existing three.
