Mason Baseball punches ticket to Washington State Senior Legion tourney

YAKIMA — Mason Baseball of Aberdeen-Hoquiam earned a state berth by winning two of three contests in the Senior Legion Super Regional baseball tournament last weekend in Yakima.

The Harbor club downed Lakeside Recovery of Issaquah, 7-4, in a winner-to-state, loser-out contest Sunday. Mason advanced to state beginning Saturday at Centralia’s Wheeler Field.

Sammy Lowder pitched eight innings of three-hit ball in the victory over Lakeside, with Kolby Shelton finishing up on the mound. Cole Edwards and Jack Skinner each collected two hits and two RBIs, while Josh Bishop and Zack Spradlin also had two hits apiece.

Mason had also beaten Lakeside, 3-1, in its opening super regional contest. Skyler Jump allowed only four hits in eight innings, with Shelton collecting the save. Blake Kelly tripled and singled, while Skinner added two hits in that contest.

A six-run seventh inning enabled Pepsi Pak of Yakima to close out a 13-3 win over Mason in the second round. Mason amassed 12 hits, but stranded eight runners. Edwards had three hits and Kelly two for the Harborites.

Mason will open state against the Kennewick Bandits at 9 a.m. Saturday. The double-elimination tournament runs through July 30.
