North Beach writes a new history page in win over Hoquiam

A second-half explosion helped North Beach’s boys make history on Monday.

A 30-6 scoring run that began early in the third quarter lifted the Hyaks to their first-ever boys basketball win over Hoquiam, 60-38, in a non-league contest at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Corey Thornton scored 17 points and Gabe Hernandez added 16 for the Class 2B Hyaks (3-0), who have swept Class 1A opposition this season.

The Grizzlies (0-3) shot 22 percent from the field and committed 30 turnovers.

Hoquiam took its only lead of the game late in the second quarter. A 3-pointer by Jack Adams III and a free throw by Blake Kelly put Hoquiam up 26-25 with about one minute left in the first half.

North Beach took the lead back on a trey by Thornton and Gabe Hernandez closed out the half for the Hyaks with a two-point bucket, giving North Beach a 30-26 lead at the break.

In the third quarter, what had been a close game turned into a blowout.

North Beach made eight of its 10 field goal attempts in the third quarter and outscored Hoquiam 19-7. Six different Hyaks scored during that stretch, led by Hernandez’ five points.

“We did a better job of relaxing (in the third quarter),” North Beach head coach Larry Moore said. “We slowed ourselves down a bit and cleaned up our defensive play. Our defense is probably our best offense. It led to some easy buckets and that’s why our offense was better.”

Hoquiam had a difficult time against North Beach’s full-court pressure defense.

“North Beach has a good team this year. We knew that going in,” Hoquiam head coach Curtis Eccles said. “But if you turn the ball over as much as we did, there aren’t many teams that you can beat. We need to take care of the basketball. We made a lot of poor choices.”

Adams, who tallied 10 points, was Hoquiam’s lone double-figure scorer. Camden Anderson added eight points for the Grizzlies.

Weather permitting, the Grizzlies will be back in action tonight when they travel to Centralia.

North Beach opens Pacific League play Friday at Northwest Christian.
