Ocosta's pressure defense turns over Wishkah, 34-25

WISHKAH — Ocosta’s full-court pressure proved the difference in a 34-25 non-league girls basketball over Wishkah on Monday night at Brian Eager Memorial Gym.

The Wildcats (1-1) forced numerous turnovers in a defensive battle. Courtney Rutzer scored 10 points, while Alyssa Phillips had six points and 12 rebounds for Ocosta.

“Our hustle was outstanding,” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum said. “Our man-to-man pressure just caused them havoc.”

“Their backcourt had very strong defense,” Wishkah coach Katherine Butcher agreed. “They pressed us and forced a lot of turnovers.”

Payton West paced the Loggerettes with 10 points and was cited for her floor leadership. Ryan Anderson added seven points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots, while Eliza Kinnaman collected 11 rebounds and six steals. Kinnaman had also led the Loggerettes in rebounding with 10 in a season-open loss at Evergreen Lutheran.

Butcher praised both teams for their effort.

“It was 32 minutes of good competitive basketball,” she said.

The Wildcats will host Mary M. Knight as part of a co-ed doubleheader Wednesday, with the varsity games in the main gym and the junior varsity contests in the community gym (Ocosta’s junior varsity girls will face the Aberdeen C Squad).

Wishkah entertains Clallam Bay on Saturday.
