Pitching, big inning lead Grizzlies over Cougars

PUYALLUP — Hoquiam’s pitchers extended a scoreless-inning streak to more than 20 before settling for a 6-1 victory over Cascade Christian in a non-league baseball game Friday at Puyallup.

Skyler Jump, Tristan Stutesman and Jerod Steen combined on a four-hitter as the Grizzlies improved to 8-1 for the season. Jump, who pitched the first five innings, picked up the victory.

“I really thought Skyler pitched great,” said his father and coach, Steve Jump. “He kept the ball down, had good control, for five innings. We played really good defense and gave him great run support.”

The Grizzlies broke it open with a four-run fifth inning.

After consecutive singles by Steen and Josh Bishop, Blake Kelly stroked a two-run triple. Tristan Stutesman followed with an RBI single and eventually scored on Austin Edwards’ squeeze bunt.

Bishop led Hoquiam’s attack with three hits.

The Grizzlies return to Evergreen 1A League competition Tuesday with a critical contest at Tenino.
