Grizzlies 2, Hawks 0
Ivan Salguero accounted for both goals as Hoquiam extended its winning streak to five with a non-league victory over River Ridge on Wednesday at Sea Breeze Oval.
Salguero connected on a free kick in the 37th minute. He added an insurance goal with about nine minutes remaining, when he collected the ball off an errant River Ridge pass and lofted a shot over the goalkeeper.
The Grizzlies (5-2) dominated play in the second half. They outshot the Class 2A Hawks 21-12 and had a 19-6 bulge in on-target shots.
“We hit the post something like three times,” Hoquiam coach Fidel Sanchez said.
“We’ve been working in practice on ball movement,” Sanchez added. “We were knocking the ball around really well. That was what kept River Ridge on the defensive end.”
Salguero and midfielders Osiel Rivera and Alex PugaDeLaRosa were credited with fine performances.
The Grizzlies return to Evergreen 1A League play Tuesday by hosting Elma in a critical contest.
MONTESANO — Three pitchers combined on a one-hitter in the second game as Montesano completed a sweep of Rainier, 5-3 and 4-0, in an Evergreen 1A League makeup doubleheader Wednesday at Vessey Field.
Austin Peterson, Kody Usher and Jake Herzog divided the pitching chores in the second game as the Bulldogs (2-2, 2-3) attempted to maintain full mound eligibility for today’s doubleheader at Rochester.
“It was important for everybody to do their job today and they did,” Monte coach Mike Bruner said.
Montresano’s Jacob Hliboki delivered a two-run double in the fifth inning.
Peterson, who started and collected the victory in the nightcap, picked up the save in the opening game. Entering with a two-run lead and two runners in scoring position, the Montesano freshman broke off three curves for a game-ending strikeout.
Kyle Englund also turned in a strong mound performance in the opener, in relief of starter Greg Benner.
Consecutive doubles by Sawyer Rhoden and Maguire Cavanaugh capped a three-run second inning that gave the Bulldogs a permanent lead.
Catcher Jordan Bussard, who threw out several baserunners, was cited by Bruner for fine play.
