Rodney coughs up late Mariner lead

SEATTLE — Hisashi Iwakuma was masterful again at Safeco Field.

Too bad for the Mariners, Fernando Rodney’s ninth-inning woes surfaced again, too.

Rodney, the Mariners’ first-year closer, allowed two runs in the ninth to waste Iwakuma’s eight-inning gem, as the Tampa Bay Rays rallied for a 2-1 victory Tuesday night before a crowd of 13,446.

The Mariners led 1-0 entering the ninth inning.

The Rays’ leadoff hitter, David DeJesus, who was knocked to the ground on a way-inside fastball from Rodney, belted a 2-2 changeup well beyond the wall in right field to tie the score at 1-1.

James Loney singled with two outs, Desmond Jennings followed with a sharp single and Matt Joyce blooped a single to center to drive in the go-ahead run.

Rodney was pulled after walking Yunel Escobar. As he walked slowly back to the dugout, fans booed. The Mariners signed Rodney, the former Rays closer, to a two-year, $14 million contract last offseason.

Iwakuma allowed just four hits, with no walks and five strikeouts, in eight shutout innings. He hasn’t allowed a run in 16 innings (over two starts) at home this season.

David Price (4-3), the 2012 AL Cy Young winner, allowed only a first-inning run in complete-game effort, striking out 10 through eight innings.

James Jones, the Mariners’ rookie leadoff hitter, fell behind 0-2 before lacing a 95-mph fastball the other way, just inside the third-base bag, for a. He advanced to second on a Sefen Romero ground out and scored when Robinson Cano grounded out to first.

In the first inning, Iwakuma allowed a one-out double to DeJesus. After that, Iwakuma retired 13 Rays in a row before Matt Joyce singled with two outs in the fifth.

Iwakuma retired 13 Rays in a row before Joyce’s two-out single in the fifth. Escobar followed with a sharp single to center, but Jose Molina popped out to Cano to end the inning.
