Bellevue Christian Invite

KIRKLAND — Although operating with a limited squad, Montesano captured the girls team championship at the Bellevue Christian Invitational on Saturday at Juanita High School in Kirkland.

The Bulldogs finished with 96 1/2 points to beat runner-up Chelan by 8 1/2. Montesano placed third in the boys meet with 71 points, behind champion Chelan with 99 1/2 and runner-up Bellevue Christian with 71.

Montesano did not enter a full roster due to conflicts with academic testing and state powerlifting, but still competed successfully against teams from other districts.

“It was a pretty good meet for us, I’m glad we went,” Monte coach Doug Schupbach said. “We had a good look at other teams and some different athletes and had some pretty good performances, boys and girls.”

The Bulldogs won five individual titles. Bulldog freshman Shayla Floch had an outstanding day, winning the girls long jump with a mark of 15-11 — a personal best by about a foot — and placed in three other events.

Reed Hughes captured the boys 110 high hurdles, with a time of 15.6, and was third in the long hurdles.

Montesano’s distance runners fared well. Sydney Potter led a Bulldog sweep of the girls 3,200 meters, winning it in 12:07, with teammates Andrea Ostwald and Gabrielle Rudolph taking second and third. Ostwald and Rudolph also ran second and third, respectively, in the 1,600.

Connor Lovell won the boys 800 meters in 2:05.
