Seahawks, Wilson No. 1 in merchandise, jersey sales

Chalk up another first for the Seahawks.

In the wake of the team’s Super Bowl title — the first in the 38-year history of the franchise — the Seahawks are now at the top of the NFL in merchandise sales, and quarterback Russell Wilson now has the top-selling jersey.

The Seahawks ranked fourth in merchandise sales on Dec. 31, according to numbers provided by the NFL. But in figures released Tuesday, more Seahawks merchandise has been sold in a period from April 1, 2013 to Feb. 28, 2014 than that of any other team. Seattle is followed by Denver, San Francisco and Dallas.

An NFL official said it is the first time the Seahawks have been at the top of merchandise sales and that Wilson has had the top-selling jersey. Wilson was third on Dec. 31 behind Colin Kaepernick and Peyton Manning. Manning is now second to Wilson and Kaepernick third in the same period of April 1, 2013-Feb. 28, 2014.

Leo Kane, the senior vice president of consumer products for the NFL, says teams that won the Super Bowl always see a bump in sales.

But Kane says the spike in purchases of Seahawks merchandise and jerseys “is one of the best we’ve ever had, if not the best ever.”

Not only is Wilson first among players, but Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch is fifth and cornerback Richard Sherman sixth (Lynch was 11th on Dec. 31 and Sherman 19th).

Most of the sales, Kane says, are from the Pacific Northwest, and he says it also helps that the team debuted new uniforms in 2012.

“But with the dominating fashion they marched through the playoffs and the Super Bowl and their exciting new colors, their merchandise will resonate around the country, particularly with our younger fans,” Kane said.

Wilson’s Seahawks jersey isn’t the only one selling well right now, though.

Anecdotal reports have stated that Wilson’s Texas Rangers jersey has been selling briskly in the past few days after he spent Monday working out with the team at spring training.
