Grays Harbor wins Longview tourney
LONGVIEW — At the Dennis Tieu Memorial tournament, a 14U baseball open invitational, Grays Harbor Babe Ruth’s 14-year-old all-stars won the title with a 10-3 win over Bullets Baseball, of Vancouver-Ridgefield, on Sunday.
Grays Harbor, already assured of a Southern Washington Babe Ruth 14s tournament berth at Kennewick due to just two district entries, went 4-0 in the two-day affair.
“It was a complete team effort,” GH head coach Dave Hinchen said. “We didn’t have any kids with an (on-base percentage) lower than .500 and most of them hit over .500 for the tournament. We pitched well, defended well. Everyone had a hand in this one.”
In the title game, Walker Dunn’s three-run triple in the bottom of the fourth inning allowed Grays Harbor to get distance against the Bullets. Sean McAllister and Hunter Oldham combined for a three-hitter on the mound.
McAllister and Kylan Touch each had inside-the-park home runs and Hunter Hinchen added two hits and three RBI for Grays Harbor.
Grays Harbor beat Kelso, 10-1, and Astoria, Ore., 9-2, in pool play. Victor James led the team with three hits, including a triple and a double, and three RBI against Kelso. Garrett Bradley had four hits and three RBI against Astoria.
In bracket play, Grays Harbor overcame a 6-2 deficit to beat Astoria for the second time, 16-6. Touch scored three runs and drove in two more for Grays Harbor. Oldham was cited for his two innings of no-hit pitching to cool off Astoria.
Grays Harbor begins state tournament play on July 16-20 at Kennewick.
