Sand stands second in junior golf tourney

Hoquiam’s John Sand is in second place entering today’s final round of the American Junior Golf Association Junior All-Star golf tournament at the Sunriver resort in Oregon.

Sand carded a 67 on Tuesday to take the opening-round lead, then added a 69 on Wednesday. He trails Joseph Chun, a native of South Korea who now resides in Irvine, Calif., by one stroke after 36 holes.

The prestigious tournament includes some of the top junior golfers on the West Coast and Canada.

Two area teams make preseason rankings

Montesano and Raymond were included in the Associated Press preseason state high school football poll released Wednesday.

The Bulldogs were ranked fifth among state Class 1A teams. The Seagulls were rated ninth in the 2B classification, while North Beach was first among teams also receiving votes in the 2B class.

Harbor football jamboree due Friday

Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Montesano and Elma will compete in the Grays Harbor Football Jamboree on Friday at Montesano’s Rottle Field.

Centralia and Tenino will also compete in the event, which begins at 6 p.m. Each school’s varsity and JV teams will play two mini-games apiece, beginning at 6 p.m. Varsity and JV contests will be staged concurrently on opposite sides of the 50-yard line.

The program will open with the Montesano-Centralia varsity and Hoquiam-Tenino JV games. Admission will be $3.

South Bend Labor Day run set

The South Bend Labor Day run is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.

A traditional feature of South Bend’s Labor Day festivities, the run will begin and end at the Rails to Trails restrooms at Summit Street on Highway 101.
