Regional wrestling tourneys due Saturday

Grays Harbor female wrestlers will be staying close to home while males will be venturing far afield for regional competition Saturday.

Hoquiam will host the Region III tournament on Saturday. Wrestling begins at 11 a.m., with competition on three mats until the title round. The top four finishers at each weight will advance to Mat Classic, the all-classification state championship extravaganza, on Feb. 21-22 at the Tacoma Dome.

Aberdeen wrestlers will compete in the Region III Class 2A boys tourney Saturday at Steilacoom High School. The opening matches are scheduled for 9 a.m., with the title round planned for approximately 6:15 p.m. The top four at each weight earn state berths.

Elma, Montesano and Hoquiam will journey to Blaine for a regional 1A tournament on Saturday. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m., with the top four at each weight advancing to state.

The Class 2B regionals are planned for Darrington on Saturday. Action starts at 10 a.m., with the top three at each weight earning state berths.

Four area teams remain ranked

Montesano’s girls and Willapa Valley’s boys moved up in the weekly Associated Press state basketball rankings this week.

The unbeaten Bulldogs improved to seventh in the Class 1A poll. Willapa Valley is sixth among Class 2B girls teams.

Willapa Valley’s boys are tied for sixth in the Class 2B boys rankings. North Beach remains fifth in that classification.

District swimming on tap this weekend

The District IV 2A Boys Swimming Championships are scheduled for this weekend at Mark Morris High School in Longview.

Preliminaries are scheduled for Friday, with the finals slated for Saturday. The top three finishers in each event, plus those who meet state time standards, will advance to state Feb. 21-22 at Federal Way.

Monte LL registration, tryouts planned

Final Montesano Little League registration is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Nelson Field clubhouse.

Tryouts are planned Feb. 22-23 at Beacon Elementary School. The tryout schedule, by age group:

Feb. 22: 10 a.m. — 8-9 age group. 11 a.m. — 10-year-olds. 12:15 p.m. — 11-12 age group. Feb. 23: 12:30 p.m. — 8-9 age group. 1 p.m. — 10-year-olds. 1:45 p.m. — 11-12 age group.

Aberdeen’s Boora aids in Hawaii state title

Aberdeen’s Brittani Boora was a member of the Hawaii Prep team that won its first-ever Hawaii high school girls soccer championship last weekend at Oahu.

Boora is spending her junior year in Hawaii on a study abroad program. She is a starting center back for Hawaii Prep. The team had previously captured the Big Island Interscholastic Federation championship.

Montesano youth baseball tryouts set

Montesano Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball tryouts are scheduled for 1 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Bowers Batting Cage Building on the Montesano High School campus.

The tryouts are open for boys in the 13-15 age group (as of April 30). Prospective candidates will need to supply their own equipment, including shoes for both outdoor and indoor field conditions (depending on the weather).
