Bearcats plan tryouts Saturday

The Grays Harbor Bearcats semi-pro football team has scheduled open tryouts for 11 a.m. Saturday at Aberdeen’s Stewart Field.

Players must supply their own cleats and shorts, according to Bearcat co-owner Chris Raffelson. The Bearcats, who have eight home games scheduled, open their season April 5.

The Bearcats are forming a dance team, composed primarily of high school and junior high students, in addition to their cheerleading squad.

Those interested in joining the dance team are also invited to Saturday’s tryouts.

Bobcats, Eagles set coed doubleheader

The Aberdeen at Elma coed basketball doubleheader, scheduled for Saturday, will feature earlier starting times than standard high school games.

The girls junior varsity game is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the varsity to follow at approximately 3:30. The varsity boys contest is slated for 5 p.m. The boys C squad and junior varsity games are planned for the middle school gym, beginning at 2 p.m.

Willapa Harbor mat tourney on tap

The 26th annual Willapa Harbor Invitational wrestling tournament is scheduled for Saturday at the Raymond High School gym.

The North Beach, Adna, Tenino, Tacoma Baptist, Chief Leschi/Muckleshoot, Ilwaco and Quilayeute Tribal varsities and Montesano, Elma and Tumwater JVs will join host Willapa Harbor in the tourney.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Aberdeen Hall of Fame meeting set

The nominating meeting of the Aberdeen High School Hall of Fame committee is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday at the Aberdeen High School Community Room.

Nominations for Hall of Fame inductees will be taken at the meeting, which is open to the public. Final balloting will be made at a later date.

Those unable to attend the meeting but wishing to submit nominations may contact committee members or AHS athletic director Ken Ashlock at 538-2065 or kashlock@asd5.org.

Hoop Shoot champions crowned

Six champions were crowned in the Hoquiam Elks Hoop Shoot competition Monday at the Hoquiam High School gym.

Winners advance to the West Central Hoop Shoot on Saturday at Sequim. Age-group winners, with successful free throws out of 25 attempts listed in parenthesis:

8-9: Girls — Karime Acuna (8 out of 25, won shoot-off with Carron Blood). Boys — Jake Templer (10). 10-11: Girls — Annie Tanner (5). Boys — Nick Grossi (16). 12-13: Girls — Peyton Parshall (15, won triple shoot-off with Jade Cox). Boys — Jackson Folkers (17).

Elma Babe Ruth meeting planned

An Elma Babe Ruth League meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sunday at the Elma branch of Our Community Credit Union.

The election of officers, appointment of coaches and potential changes in the league operation will be discussed. Those interested in volunteering to assist with the league operation are urged to attend.

Registration is scheduled from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at the same location.
