Four Twin Harbors hoop teams ranked

Four Twin Harbors teams are included in the weekly Associated Press state high school basketball poll.

Unbeaten Montesano returned to the Class 1A girls rankings in ninth position. Willapa Valley moved up to fourth among Class 2B girls.

Willapa Valley’s boys victory over North Beach on Saturday enabled the Vikings to crack the Class 2B rankings in ninth. The previously unbeaten Hyaks fell from third to fifth.

Aberdeen to host wrestling tourney Saturday

The Aberdeen Last-Chance Invitational Wrestling Tournament is scheduled for Saturday at Sam Benn Gym.

The tourney replaces the Aberdeen Kickoff Classic that was canceled due to adverse weather in early December.

“The (name) is due to the fact that this will be the last chance for some of the wrestlers to fine-tune before the postseason begins,” Aberdeen coach Chuck Veloni reported.

Montesano, Elma, Bellingham, Franklin Pierce, Winlock and the Quileute Tribal School will join the host Bobcats in the tourney. A few other teams have tentatively entered but had yet to confirm their participation by early this week.

Several teams, however, are planning to hold out some standouts due to high match counts.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m., with the title round planned for early afternoon.
