Grizzly Alumni wrestling tourney set

Fourteen teams are expected for Hoquiam’s annual Grizzly Alumni Invitational wrestling tournament on Saturday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Mark Morris will return to defend its 2013 championship. The Twin Harbors will be well-represented, with Aberdeen, Elma, Montesano, North Beach and Willapa Harbor joining host Hoquiam in the field.

Other tourney participants include Cashmere, Wahkiakum, Winlock/Toledo/Onalaska, Fort Vancouver, Lincoln of Tacoma, River Ridge and Quileute Tribal.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m., with the title round planned for approximately 4:30 p.m.

There will be no girls tournament this year.

Earlier starting time for Choker games

The Highline-Grays Harbor College coed basketball doubleheader at Sam Benn Gym will be played Saturday afternoon — earlier than the customary starting times.

The women’s contest begins at noon, with the men’s contest scheduled for 2 p.m. The earlier start is to accommodate the North Thurston-Aberdeen girls basketball game Saturday night at the same location.

Two area hoop teams ranked

North Beach’s boys and Willapa Valley’s girls were included in the first state high school basketball rankings released by the Associated Press.

The unbeaten Hyaks are rated third among Class 2B boys teams. The Vikings are sixth among state 2B girls teams.

Unbeaten Montesano was tops among teams also receiving votes in the Class 1A girls poll.

Elma’s Thomas aids in historic Cougar win

Lia Galdeira scored 28 points as Washington State notched its first women’s basketball victory over Washington since 1995 by holding off the Huskies, 82-80, on Tuesday at Pullman.

Elma High School graduate Brandi Thomas came off the bench to score seven points for the Cougars (3-0 in conference play). She hit 3-of-4 field-goal attempts.

Aberdeen Little League sign-ups billed

Aberdeen Little League registration begins Saturday at the Harbor High School computer lab.

Saturday’s registration session is planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration continues at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 29, 10 a.m. Feb. 8 and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at the same location.

Monte Little League registration announced

Montesano Little League registration begins Jan. 21 at the Montesano High School library.

Registration sessions are planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 21, Feb. 3 and Feb. 5 at the same location. The fee is $55 per player. First-time participants in the league are required to supply a copy of the player’s birth certificate. Those is the 10-12 age group must supply three proof of residency documents (driver’s license, cable bill, utility bill, etc.). One proof-of-residency document is required for players in the 4-9 age group. Medical insurance information is also required.

Free registration will be offered for players whose parents volunteer to serve as managers for the 2014 season. This applies to all divisions, but only for the offspring of managers (not assistant coaches). Only one child per family may receive free registration.
