Taholah outlasts North Beach in a girls non-league basketball game

TAHOLAH — Following a ragged first half, Taholah’s offense woke up in the second half to give the Chitwhins a non-league girls basketball win over their southern rivals on Monday.

Both teams brought their defenses to bear on the other before the hosts pulled away in the second half in Taholah’s 43-30 win over North Beach.

The two teams combined for 150 field-goal attempts and knocked home 29 overall, a .193 clip. Taholah (9-1) did better on its end of the floor — 19-for-77 (.247) — with most of the offense coming in the second half. North Beach (6-11) was 10-for-73 (.137) from the field.

“There was a lot of defense going on and not much offense,” Taholah assistant coach Donald Waugh said. “We were flat. We played decent defense, but North Beach outhustled us. We changed around in the second half. We emphasized our offense after halftime and things worked out as they did.”

Nicole Hidalgo led the Chitwhins with 13 points, 18 rebounds and three blocked shots. Rachel Cheney added 11 points and Marquel Waugh and Trish Charley each pulled in eight rebounds.

Quay Sotomish led the Hyaks with 13 points.

On Thursday, North Beach hosts Raymond. On Friday, Taholah hosts Shorewood Christian.
