Thursday Prep Roundup: Raymond, Ocosta boys register soggy track wins

Raymond meet

RAYMOND — A 10-school gathering at Raymond High School ended the regular track & field season on Thursday in a torrential downpour.

Host Raymond won the boys meet, while Napavine edged out the Gulls, 146-145, in the girls meet.

“The boys ran away with it, again; the girls nearly won the thing,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “It was a big meet, lots of teams. For the girls, it seemed like all year, they would finish in the middle of the pack. To come out near the top in a big meet with more teams, tougher competition, they stepped up their performances.”

Rayce Newman won three events for Raymond — 100 and 200 meters and the long jump — with Tully citing Alex Vaca, who won the 400m and pushed Newman in the 200m to finish second. Terry Broten was also cited for his win in the 300m hurdles and a PR in the 110m high hurdles.

In the girls meet, Tully cited Hannah Dykes, who won three events (100m, long jump and triple jump), and Mikayla Collins, who won the 3,200m with a 20-second PR. “She ran down a couple of runners in the final straightaway to win; it was an impressive run,” added Tully.

Wishkah head coach Bob Eager cited Gabe Quintero, who finished with three PRs, and Ryan Anderson for her PR in the triple jump.

“It was a good meet; we had pretty good showing by a lot of the kids, despite the conditions,” Eager said.

The Class 2B subdistrict meet begins Wednesday at Naselle. Wishkah will compete in a Class 1B bi-district meet the same day at Franklin Pierce High School in Parkland.

Ocosta meet

WESTPORT — Host Ocosta braved soggy condition to take boys team honors in a six-school meet Thursday.

Alex Herrera won two events as the Wildcats totaled 160 points, 28 ahead of runner-up North Beach. Adna won the girls meet.

Herrera prevailed in the high jump at 5-8 and established a season-best of 40-2 1/2 in the triple jump.

Siblings Luke and Kathryn Anderson were among the event winners for the Wildcats. Kathryn Anderson, rounding back into form after suffering a pulled muscle and dislocated shoulder earlier in the season, took the girls 200 and 400.

Ocosta’s Kelsey Gundersen registered a personal best in the girls 800.

“Overall, it was a great effort despite the weather,” Wildcat coach Aaron Anderson noted.

North Beach and South Bend, competing in today’s Southwest Washington Classic at Ridgefield, rested many of their top performers. The Hyaks also juggled their lineup in some events, entering weightmen in the boys sprint relays.

Hyak standout Caleb Bridge, however, did uncork a pair of outstanding throws in winning the shot put (51-11) and discus (160-10). Both marks were barely shy of his state-best throws in both events.

“Considering the weather, he had a monster day,” Hyak coach Bob Wiley said.

Tim Poplin, Kassidee Towery, Ashley Krusemark and Tehya Pillsbury were also cited by Wiley for good outings.

South Bend entered an extremely limited crew, but received event wins from Tristan Hansen in the boys long jump and Katlyn Sawyer in the girls javelin.

Rochester meet

ROCHESTER — Although resting many of their top performers, Hoquiam and Montesano recorded some victories in a multi-school meet hosted by Rochester on Thursday.

Host Rochester swept team honors. Some Montesano and Hoquiam standouts skipped the meet to prepare for tonight’s Southwest Washington Classic at Ridgefield.

“It wasn’t a meet we were trying to win, obviously,” HHS coach Tim Pelan said. “We were trying to give kids a chance to improve their marks. I thought the kids competed well. There wasn’t a lot of pressure on them, like in big invitationals.”

Hoquiam’s Alexis Franklin knocked 25 seconds off her previous best time in winning the girls 1,600 meters in 6:14.0

Boys shot put winner Chase Watters also drew Pelan’s praise, as did Chris Smith in the boys 400 and LeAnn Gladsjo in the long jump.

A pair of Logans — Logan Truax in the 400 and Logan Clements in the 1,600 — joined discus thrower Isaiah Pellegrino as event winners for Montesano’s boys. Freshman Baylee Roble was a double winner in the discus for the Bulldog girls.

FORKS — Elma’s Ira Hartford won three events in a three-school meet hosted by Forks on Thursday.

Hartford swept the boys sprints and also won the long jump. Teammate Wesley Allen captured the 1,600 meters.

Megan Peterson was Elma’s lone female winner, in the shot put.

Host Forks swept team honors in a meet conducted in heavy rain.
