Track Roundup: Bulldog, Grizzly girls tie at Hoquiam meet

Hoquiam meet

A four-way Evergreen 1A League meet at Hoquiam’s Sea Breeze Oval did little to determine a girls team favorite for today’s Ray Ryan Memorial Grays Harbor All-County meet.

Montesano and Hoquiam, expected to battle it out for all-county team honors, wound up tied Thursday with 83 points.

The Bulldogs won the boys meet with 94 1/2 points.

As if often the case in early season meets in close proximity to the all-county event, the Grizzlies and Bulldogs made limited use of their standouts.

But the rain held off and performances were generally good.

“Overall, it was a pretty good meet,” Monte girls coach Doug Schupbach said. “We had some pretty good individual performances by our younger kids.”

“They all competed, but we held them back on a number of events,” Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan noted. “The weather turned out to be nice and there were some pretty good marks, particularly this early in the year.”

Conner Lovell was the only double winner for the Montesano boys, taking the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.9 and the triple jump at 36-6.

Montesano’s Jordan Spradlin broke the freshman girls shot put record set by current USC trackster Tera Novy with a throw of 36-10. She also won the discus with a 104-7 toss.

Bulldog distance ace Gabrielle Rudolph, who has been nursing a foot injury, made a successful season debut by taking the 1,600, the only event she entered.

Monte girls coach Doug Schupbach also cited the performances of Shayla Floch and Cortney Miller.

Hoquiam’s girls 4x200-meter relay foursome of Savannah Smith, Olivia Rose, Emma Skinner and Brittoni Wright narrowly missed the school record for that event with a sizzling time of 1:48.0.

Pelan also praised the performances of Arleen Kramer in the throws and Smith in the girls 100 meters.

Kenny Huffman was a double winner for the Grizzly boys in the shot and discus.

Vince Tran, a first-year trackster who won the 400 meters, and Jaron Rose drew Pelan’s praise.

Raymond meet

RAYMOND — Hosting a multi-school meet, Raymond showcased its depth in both the boys and girls meets, plus showed off some first-place punch, to sweep on Thursday afternoon.

The Gulls easily won the boys meet with 254 points. In the girls meet, Raymond held off a strong challenge from South Bend. Ocosta. Naselle, Wishkah and North River were also at the meet.

“With both teams winning, I was pretty happy with that,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “With the boys team, with our numbers and depth, we took that one easily. But, there were some good performances in there as well. The girls meet was competitive and it was nice to see the girls compete against South Bend and Ocosta. I like where we’re at right now.”

Rayce Newman won three events — 100 and 200-meter sprints and the long jump — for Raymond, with Tully citing the performances of Ally Phansisay, Darol Ratsavongsy, Alex Vaca and Aaron deMontigny.

North Beach meet

OYEHUT — North Beach’s boys and Willapa Valley’s girls took team honors in a four-school meet Thursday at Lt. Jim Davis Field.

Strong showings in the sprints and field events paced the Hyaks to a lopsided victory in the boys meet.

Valley nipped North Beach, 97-95, in the girls meet.

North Beach’s Carson Ketter swept the boys 100 and 200 meters, anchored a winning sprint relay team and finished second to reigning state 2B champion Matt Konigsberger of Willapa Valley in the javelin.

“He improved his marks in three of the events,” Hyak coach Bob Wiley noted. “And all our throwers improved immensely from the first meet.”

North Beach’s Caleb Bridge took the boys shot put and discus, establishing a personal best with a 49-6 mark in the shot.

In addition to winning the javelin at 151-4, Konigsberger won the boys 400 meters.

Eight Viking girls won at least one individual event. Freshman Abby Hodel doubled in the 100 and 200 meters.

For North Beach’s girls, Wiley cited the performances of Jenna Vogler, Reilly Moore and Quay Sotomish. He also noted the contributions of first-year jumping coach Peter Fry.

Taholah had a pair of winners in boys miler Dusty Capoeman and female javelin thrower Rachel Cheney.

North Beach and Taholah will compete in the Ray Ryan Memorial All-County meet today at Elma. Valley will join Raymond and South Bend in the Pacific County tri-district meet Thursday at South Bend.

Tenino meet

TENINO — Elma tuned up for Saturday’s all-county meet by winning the boys half of a three-school Evergreen 1A League meet Thursday at Tenino.

The Eagles totaled 74 1/2 points to beat runner-up Forks by 31 points. Tenino won the girls meet.

Elma, which will host the Ray Ryan Memorial All-County Track Championship on Saturday, made limited use of some of its top males.

Tyson Nauman was the only two-time individual winner, taking the high jump and triple jump. He competed in the latter event for the first time.

Rashad Lorton won the long jump. Hurdles standout Ray Stark skipped his specialty but won the 100 meters, while Chance Bremer took the 200 and Jacob Stevens prevailed in the discus.

Bethany Lipska, who took the triple jump, was the lone event winner for Elma’s girls. Her 34-foot mark was a personal best.

“Our kids came out and really competed,” Eagle assistant coach Bryan Schneider said. “They’re excited for (the all-county meet).”

Bill Zwarun and Chris Aiken are serving as Elma’s co-coaches this season. Longtime coach Dave Beeler is not coaching this season due due to personal reasons.
