Track Roundup: Raymond boys sprint to win at South Bend

South Bend meet

SOUTH BEND — A beautiful day greeted nine schools at South Bend’s Don Weisel Oval on Thursday and everyone took advantage of the conditions during this season opening multi-school meet.

Raymond’s boys edged out Northwest Christian-Lacey to win the boys meet, while the Navigators used their distance runners to pull away from the Gulls in the girls meet.

Overall, everyone was happy for the weather conditions and the chance to compete.

“This was a good first meet for everyone,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “The kids competed well and had pretty good marks for this early in the season. The nice weather helps with that. I was really happy with the way the kids competed. I got to see the work the kids have been putting in pay off.”

Tully cited Rayce Newman, who despite nursing a tender hamstring muscle won 100 and 200-meter sprints and was a part of the 4x100m winning relay team, and Hannah Dykes who won the 100 sprint, the long jump and the triple jump.

Tully also pointed out Elliot Murdock, who ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x400 relay that edged out Northwest Christian. “He’d try to get out of it, but ended up pulling away from the kid in the final 200 meters,” Tully said.

Wishkah head coach Bob Eager cited senior Keigan Gardiner, who won the 110-meter high hurdles, Trey Berge in his win in the discus, Lacey Barber for her run in the 200m sprint, Ryan Anderson in the javelin and Benjamin Malchert for his runs in the 800 and 1,600m.

“Overall, I thought we did really good,” Eager said. “For a first meet, we were really pleased.”

Taholah’s Jon Jackson was a double winner in the boys javelin and shot put.

South Bend coach Steve Lazelle cited the performances of siblings A.J. and Emily Sanchez and Brianna Kinney — the latter making her first-ever high school track appearance.

The Indians, incidentally, will not compete in the Rainier Icebreaker Invitational as scheduled Saturday and will instead resume action next week at Raymond.

Naselle meet

NASELLE —Strong showings in the sprints and field events helped North Beach’s boys and Willapa Valley’s girls take team honors in a multi-school meet Thursday at Naselle.

The Hyak boys finished 31 1/2 points ahead of runner-up Toledo. Valley’s girls amassed 193 points — 66 ahead of North Beach.

Caleb Bridge and Carson Ketter were double winners for North Beach’s boys. Bridge took the shot put with a throw of 43-3 and popped the discus 144-6 to take top honors in that event.

Ketter doubled in the 100 and 200 meters.

Ocosta’s Alex Herrera was a triple winner in the jumps.

Willapa Valley’s Matt Konigsberger, the reigning Class 2B javelin champion, prevailed in that event and also scored an impressive victory in the 400 meters.

Valley freshman Abby Hodel made an impressive varsity debut by winning both girls sprints and also anchoring a winning effort in the 4x100-meter relay.

Making her first appearance in the girls long jump since middle school, Valley’s Karli Friese won that event and paced a Viking sweep of the top four places in the pole vault.

The Vikings also swept the top three places in the girls javelin, with Kate Rockett taking that event.

“For right out of the gate, I’m pretty happy with how things went,” Valely coach Dave Ege observed.

North Beach’s Quay Sotomish took the short hurdles. Rebekah Saul (400 meters) and Becke Shurtz (discus) won events for Ocosta.
