TUMWATER — Entering Thursday’s Evergreen 2A Conference match-up unbeaten, untied and unscored upon, Aberdeen departed Tumwater with the first two distinctions intact.
Perfect on four penalty-kick opportunities, the Bobcats outlasted the T-Birds in a shootout at Tumwater Stadium. The Cats won the shootout, 4-1, after regulation play and overtime ended in a 1-1 standoff.
Aberdeen’s Seth Caba, Isaiah Contreras, Victor Corona and Cesar Corona each converted spot kicks in the shootout. Since AHS goalkeeper Andres Valdes had blocked two of the first three Tumwater shots, the Bobcats (3-0, 5-0) didn’t need the fifth attempt.
Regulation play turned into a battle between Aberdeen’s possession-style attack and Tumwater’s long-ball, fast-break offense. Shots on goal were about even, although the Bobcats had more scoring opportunities in overtime.
Contreras put in the rebound of a Seth Caba shot to open the scoring in the 55th minute. The T-Birds tied it on a long shot with about 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
“The boys won the ball stronger, one of our points of emphasis lately for us,” Aberdeen coach Larry Fleming said. “(Aside) from a couple of miscues in the back, we played an overall solid offensive and defensive game.”
Caba and Contreras up front, Victor Junco and Alex Barene at midfield and defenders Tavo Sanchez, Todd Caba and Logan Lopez were credited by Fleming with fine performances.
Tumwater handed Aberdeen its first junior varsity loss, 2-1. Guy Napoleon scored for the Bobcats, with Miguel Torres, John Pellessier and Luis Chaires cited for fine play.
The Bobcats continue their string of road games Tuesday at Chehalis.
