Unbeaten Hyak boys win own tournament

OYEHUT — Corey Thornton poured through 32 points as unbeaten North Beach toppled Tacoma Baptist, 77-64, to win the boys championship of North Beach’s Holiday with the Hyaks Basketball Tournament on Saturday at Oyehut.

Justin Chong added 14 points for the Hyaks (9-0). Gabe Hernandez pulled down 10 rebounds to go with his six points. Mike Beck scored nine points and dished up six assists.

Beck and teammate Pedro Gonzales played strong defense on Tacoma Baptist’s top two scorers, according to NB head coach Larry Moore.

A 29-point second quarter gave Tacoma Baptist a 40-37 halftime lead. The Hyaks responded by outscoring the Crusaders 21-5 in the third period.

North Beach shot 56 percent from the field.

“Both teams made a brilliant offensive show in the first half,” said Moore. “We had better defense in the third quarter, holding them to just five points. We had balanced scoring throughout the game.”

Moore praised Justin Chong and Steven Fry for fine play in the low post positions. He also cited Thornton’s good offensive effort throughout the night.

On Friday, the Hyaks will host Willapa Valley.
