OYEHUT — A close game turned into a blowout on Saturday at North Beach’s “House of Pain,” thanks to the Hyaks’ tough press defense and a third-quarter scoring barrage by Corey Thornton.
North Beach remained undefeated by topping Raymond, 60-29, in a Pacific League boys basketball game Saturday.
Thronton scored 13 of his game-high 23 points during a 20-2 third-quarter scoring run that put the Hyaks up, 45-21. North Beach knocked down four 3-pointers during that stretc — three by Thornton and one by Gabe Hernandez.
“We got a couple of easy steals to get us going (in the third quarter),” North Beach head coach Larry Moore said. “Thornton got some open looks and hit some threes. Then we started rolling a little bit and the juices got flowing once we started gaining confidence.”
Led by a pair of treys from Marvin So, Raymond (1-1 in league, 3-2 overall) scored 14 points in the first quarter. However, the Gulls managed just 15 points in the final three quarters after North Beach (3-0, 7-0) amped up the defensive pressure.
“Defensively, we played pretty well all night,” Moore said. “They hit a couple of threes early, but we adjusted when we figured out who their shooters were. We feel like we have a deep team so we try to tire the other team out and get them a little bit fatigued. Then we put the heat on them and try not to give up any easy buckets.”
The Hyaks’ full-court pressure and zone defense bothered the Gulls throughout the game and forced 22 Raymond turnovers. North Beach turned the ball over just eight times.
“I hope we don’t see too many more teams this good,” Raymond head coach Pat Rogers said. “We weren’t ready for their intensity and athleticism. They scored when they needed to and got in our face on defense. We got frustrated, the shots didn’t fall and it just snowballed from bad to worse.”
Hernandez provided a consistent and versatile scoring threat throughout the game for the Hyaks. The junior scored at least one bucket in each quarter and displayed great offensive versatility by scoring inside the paint and hitting jump shots. Hernandez finished with 19 points.
Raymond post Darol Ratsavongsy scored seven of his team-high nine points in the second half, including Raymond’s only field goal in the fourth quarter, a corner trey.
North Beach big men Carson Ketter and Steven Fry were cited by Moore for good defensive play and for providing a solid inside presence.
Both teams will be back in action this next weekend. They will each host a holiday tournament on Friday and Saturday.
