Valley girls lose, play for final regional slot Saturday

ROCHESTER — Napavine took command in the second half to earn a regional berth with a 62-49 victory over Willapa Valley in the District IV Class 2B Boys Basketball Tournament on Thursday at Rochester.

The Vikings (18-5), who needed one victory in a maximum of three games this week to qualify for regional competition, are now down to their final strike. They’ll collide with Pe Ell in a winner-to-regionals, loser-out game scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Chehalis.

Valley led 25-24 at the half, but fell victim to an extended drought in the third quarter.

Viking coach Matt Bannish said he was disappointed with his team’s performance.

“I thought we got very impatient offensively. We shot very early in the offense,” Bannish said. “We got frustrated. We went something like seven minutes without scoring. That’s been our Achilles heel, having these droughts. In some ways, we were our own worst enemies.”

Senior post Mackenzie Olson scored 22 points to lead a quartet of Napavine double-figure scorers.

Cousins Lauren and Karli Friese each had double-doubles for Valley. Lauren scored 18 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, while Karli contributed 13 points and 11 boards.
