Valley girls, Raymond boys prevail in multi-school meet

RAYMOND — Willapa Valley’s girls and Raymond’s boys took team honors in a gargantuan seven-school meet hosted by Raymond on Thursday.

Valley’s girls edged rival South Bend, 142-139. Raymond decisively took the boys meet, totaling 190 points to finish 48 ahead of North Beach.

With mild weather aiding the performances, nearly every team enjoyed fine marks.

Willapa Valley’s girls won only three events, but swept the top four places in the pole vault to nose out South Bend (which does not have any vaulters).

Valley’s other two victories came from juniors Jessica Cook in the 800 and Dominique Kudasik in the 3,200.

“We had a great day,” Viking coach Dave Ege said. “It’s nice how a little good weather helps you out. The girls have been working hard and we had lots of PRs. I’m real pleased with how things turned out.”

Raymond used its depth to prevail in the boys meet. Rayce Newman, who won the 200 meters and long jump, was the only double victor for the Gulls.

Seagull coach Mike Tully cited the performances of freshman Carlos Cruz, who had a significant PR in taking the 1,600, hurdler Hunter Borden and his boys mile relay team, which registered a season-best time of 3:44.55. Jayce Freeman, who filled in to run the opening leg of that relay, also drew Tully’s praise.

“This was our last meet before spring break,” Tully said. “It was nice to give these guys some good competition before we get some rest. I think we’re set pretty well for the rest of the season.”

Emily Sanchez was a four-time winner for South Bend’s girls. She captured the 200 meters and long jump and had a piece of two relay triumphs.

Dennis Johnson doubled in the high jump and triple jump for South Bend’s boys. Tribe coach Steve Lazelle cited Sanchez, Johnson, freshman Tracy Hoffman (who won the girls 1,600) and Dalyn Ogilvie, who had a personal best throw in the boys javelin, for fine efforts.

“I thought just about everybody competed very well,” Lazelle said. “It was a good meet all the way around.”

With a personal-best throw of 50-9 1/2, tops in the state among Class 2B throwers, North Beach’s Caleb Bridge moved into the top 10 in all classifications. He also topped his brother Seth in the discus.

North Beach’s Carson Ketter hooked up with two dandy duels in the sprints — Ketter taking the 100 meters before Newman won the 200. Ketter established personal bests in both races. Quay Sotomish was a double winner for the Hyaks in the girls hurdles.

Hyak coach Bob Wiley also noted the PRs from Alex McAra in the boys hurdles.

Taholah’s Jon Jackson won a battle of state champions in the boys javelin. His throw of 168 feet beat both Ogilvie and Valley’s Matt Konigsberger, last year’s 2B champ in that event. Jackson won the Class 1B javelin last year.
