MONTESANO — Host Montesano matched a sweep of the doubles matches with two singles match wins to knock off Tenino in this Southwest Washington 1A Leaague match on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs won both doubles matches by winning at least one set in a tiebreaker. The No. 1 doubles team of April Easter and Katie Ayres used their first-set tiebreaker win to roll to a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win.

“I’m glad our No. 1 doubles team was challneged a bit,” Montesano head coach Theresa Helland said. “They’ve been cruising along and it is good to have a challenge in order to give you experience when you get a tight match later on. Everyone played well in the heat today.”

Capital sweeps

OLYMPIA — Aberdeen registered several event wins, but Capital had far too much depth in sweeping an Evergreen 2A Conference meet Wednesday at Olympia.

The Cougars swept the top three places in four boys and six girls running events.

Freshman Kyle Hurd was a double winner for Aberdeen in the boys 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

The Bobcats also fared well in the hurdles and throwing events.

Veek Cheema and McKenzie Brooks took the boys and girls long hurdles. Miles Metke won the boys shot put at 41-6 and Levi Rose led a Bobcat sweep of the boys javelin with a throw of 135-9. Miles Devine was the other AHS male winner, taking the triple jump at 39-3.

Cathryn Paris got off a throw of 89-10 to win the girls discus. Sophomore Jadeanne Phillips edged teammate Brooks in the girls long jump.

“There were a lot of personal bests today, coming in at a great time,” Bobcat coach Sherrie Green noted. “The coaches were proud of the kids, who are working hard.”

The Bobcats will next compete in Tumwater’s Shaner Invitational on May 9.
