Woodland stays undefeated, rolls by Hoquiam, 52-27, in district game

KELSO — A spirited first quarter kept Hoquiam close to the Trico League champion on Thursday night, but not close enough at the end in the opening round of the District IV 1A girls basketball tournament.

Down 10-9 after one quarter, the Grizzlies saw the undefeated Beavers adjust and prevail for a 52-27 win at Kelso High School.

On Saturday, Hoquiam (10-12) will take on LaCenter in a district loser-out contest at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Chehalis.

“We did come right out and went after them, which was great for the girls,” HHS head coach Mark Maxfield said. “We had them frazzled for a bit. Then, the wheels came off in the second and third quarters. That’s when we had most of our turnovers and we had a lot of missed opportunities to score. From there, it snowballed on us.”

Woodland’s defense forced 27 turnovers from Hoquiam and outscored the Evergreen League’s No. 4 seed, 32-6, in the second and third quarters.

Jessica Flanagan led all scorers with 17 points for Woodland.

Brandi Creviston knocked down 11 points for Hoquiam, with Olivia Rose added five rebounds.
