Wrestling Roundup — Montesano, Elma pins down one individual title each at Vashon Island Invite

Vashon Island Invitational

VASHON — Montesano made the most of its one championship finalist, while Elma had four wrestlers in the championshi finals, during an extremely competitive Vashon Island Invitational on Saturday.

Montesano’s Jacob Ellefson and Elma’s Brek McGaughy won titles, with the Bulldogs grabbing eighth place overall and the Eagles 10th overall. Forks won the team championship.

An all-Elma final in the 220-pound final guaranteed one Elma champion — Brek McGaughy decisioned teammate Austin Carrell, 4-3.

Elma’s Tanner Sample, in the 132 final, and Tyson Dick, in the 145 final, took second overall. Sample lost to Kelso’s Tyler Wicken by major decision, 10-0. Dick lost to Zillah’s Diego Herandnez, 10-7, in their match.

Austin Cristelli finished the Elma placers with a third-place finish at 152 pounds, a 2-1 win over Zillah’s Christian Francisco.

“The tournament competition was the toughest it has been in years,” Elma head coach Jason Dick said. “I thought our guys wrestled hard, but I thought we could have gotten a few more placers. The guys wrestling in the finals wrestled really well against some really tough kids.”

Montesano had four other placers in the tournament — two thirds and two fifths.

Tyler Izatt, at 106, defeated Trevor Newburn, of Ridgefield, 6-4, to take third. Anthony Louthan, at 182, knocked off Lake Stevens’ Mason Beaver, 4-1, to finish third. Austin King, at 132, and Taylor Rupp, at 195, finished fifth.

“All five kids wrestled well and wrestled a lot of matches today,” Montesano head coach Jeff Klinger, who was home with the flu, said. “We are excited for them to have those kind of results at a really good tournament.”
