Local doctor’s health conditions prompt Department of Health action

Dr. Daniel J. Canfield

Dr. Daniel J. Canfield, an Aberdeen doctor, has been found by the state Department of Health’s Osteopathic Board to be “unable to practice with reasonable skill and safety,” according to a Department of Health news release.

In May 2017 the board said, “Charges say an evaluation found Canfield to have serious health conditions that make it difficult for him to function as a physician.”

Documents dated May 26 state that Canfield said he had voluntarily given up his privileges at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in late July or early August of 2016.

According to papers filed by the board, the medical director of Washington Physician’s Health Program wrote a letter to board staff in 2014 expressing concern about Canfield’s medical condition, which was not specified in court documents. When asked to submit to cognitive testing, Canfield did not do so, according to documents.

In October 2016 Canfield did participate in a test, and the evaluator found it would be difficult for him to function as a physician, according to documents.

A hearing date will be determined later and Canfield can defend against the charges if he wishes.

Canfield recently was involved in an auto accident on State Route 105 about seven miles south of Aberdeen May 24, where his car left the roadway and struck a tree. Investigators of the accident attributed the cause to Canfield suffering a medical episode while driving.
