FOOTBALL

Wildcats 36, Hyaks 16

WESTPORT — Ocosta used a strong ground game to beat North Beach in a SWW 2B Coastal Division contest Saturday at Griffin Field.

Hayden Hoff scored on runs of 4 and 9 yards for the Wildcats (1-1, 3-3). Kobe Beck added a 6-yard TD run and Jose Sevilla and Noah Martin found the end zone on runs of 4 and 8 yards, respectively.

Ocosta coach Chris Raffelson praised the play of his offensive line.

“The O-line is basically where you win and lose games,” Raffelson said. “We’ve focused on drive blocking and combo blocks and have worked hard on our running backs following the blocks.”

North Beach (0-2, 2-4) took an 8-0 lead when Daniel Day-Heyd broke a 60-yard TD run on a fourth-down play in the first quarter. The Hyaks also made the 2-point conversion.

The Wildcats, however, responded by scoring the next 36 points. They led 21-8 at the half.

North Beach’s Nolan Charley took a long touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.

Raffelson cited the play of Paul Bjornsgard, who kicked four conversions and uncorked a 70-yard punt.

On Friday, Ocosta travels to Raymond while North Beach hosts South Bend.

Elks win in four

JOYCE — Lake Quinault overcame a slow start to beat Crescent in four sets in a non-league match Saturday at Joyce.

Complete scores were unavailable.

The Elks (8-1) trailed in each of the first two sets — rallying to win the first 25-19 but losing the second 25-18. Their play improved as the match progressed.

“In the third and fourth games, they came out better and stronger,” Lake Quinault coach Sue Kalama said. “Our serves finally kicked in.”

The Elks host Mary M. Knight on Thursday.
