Barbara L. Smith was born in Seaside, Ore., on July 14, 1929, and went home with the Lord on Dec. 14, 2017. She graduated from high school in St. Helens, Ore., and then moved to North Cove, Wash. There she met the love of her life, Gene Smith. They were married for 65 years, until he passed in 2014. Barbara worked with her husband on the cranberry farm until they retired in 1986. Barbara and Gene’s special friends, Ellen and Milo Gunter, predeceased them.

Barbara will be best remembered as a loving wife, mother and friend. Her laughter was contagious. She loved music, singing, dancing, traveling, playing pinochle and building puzzles. She loved swimming and when younger, was a lifeguard. She was a member of the Women’s Orthopedic Association and Ladies Aid Society of the Lutheran Church.

Barbara is survived by her six children, Loretta Kuehn (Terry), Robert Smith, Bonnie Dotson, Mary Lonning (Jon), Judy Ortiz (Juan) and Janet Richards (Bob). Her son-in-law, Bob Richards, was like her second son; always there to help and provide laughter when needed. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

At Barbara’s request, there will be no memorial service. Donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Association, in her memory at ALZ.org.
