BREMERTON — Grays Harbor College ran its winning streak to 12 games by topping Olympic in its final non-league test Friday at Bremerton.

The Chokers (12-1) trailed 25-19 after one quarter before taking a permanent lead with a 22-point second period.

Alexia Thrower and Angela Sikora shared GHC scoring honors with 22 points apiece. Choker coach Chad Allan also cited the play of Estelle Wilson and Sandin Kidder.

“This was a tough one on the road,” Allan reported. “The energy was not as high as normal and Olympic came on a mission. (It) took everyone to step up and do the little things.”

The Chokers open NWAC conference play at home Wednesday against Centralia.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Vikings 44, Gulls 34

RAYMOND — In a game that is closer than the score would indicate. Willapa Valley’s girls pulled away from Raymond late to secure the 44-34 victory in a closely contested rivalry game.

Willapa Valley (6-2, 7-3) won the rebounding battle 37-31 in the contest and came away with five more offensive rebounds.

Brooke Friese led both teams in scoring with 15 points. Britney Patrick also score in double figures with 11 points.

Both were instrumental in a particularly strong third quarter in which the Vikings scored 21 points and erased what had been a seven-point deficit.

Raymond’s Makenna Williams, who had 10 points and nine rebounds, helped keep the game close. But when the Gulls (3-6, 4-9) was forced to foul, the Vikings put the game away at the foul line.

Willapa Valley will try to keep things rolling against Life Christian on Tuesday. Raymond will next visit Life Christian on Jan. 13.

TAHOLAH — Taholah’s girls got some of their reserves some extra playing time in their Coastal 1B League win over North River.

Nettie Mail led the way offensively with 16 points and eighth grader Angel Ancheta came through with nine points.

Taholah head coach Karl Braden said it was good to see players at the back end of his roster contribute to a team win and thinks games like this help bolster depth.

“It’ll be really good to get these players some experience. It’ll help us down the line,” he said.

He also highlighted Summer ManyWhiteHorses who didn’t score but played solid defense in her first varsity game.

On Tuesday, North River (0-2 in league)) will face Oakville at home while Taholah will (2-0, 6-2) will travel to Lake Quinault.

OYEHUT – Ocosta was hitting on all cylinders in its Pacific 2B League road win over North Beach on Friday.

Ocosta (6-3, 9-3) started off going inside to Kristi Rafelson as a scoring threat and then looked to Kjirstin Hopfer to hit open jumpers.

Ocosta head coach Jason Barnum said things ran smoothly from the opening tip.

“Once we established our inside scoring threat our offense just opened up from there,” he said. “We moved the ball well and we had good looks from the outside.”

Ocosta will take on Forks this afternoon while North Beach (2-7, 2-9) will get a brief break before visiting Hoquiam on Wednesday.

WISHKAH — Third-quarter struggles for Wishkah’s girls proved to be the difference in a Coastal 1B loss to Oakville.

Wishkah owned a 17-8 halftime lead but the offense stalled in the second half.

Interim head coach Kristi Christian was disappointed with the loss but saw reasons for optimism in the team’s first league game.

“We played a good game, and it was tight throughout, but our offense fell flat in the third,” she said. “I thought we played pretty well for our first league game.”

Erica Bomhoff played a solid overall game in the loss and had nine points along with four steals and six rebounds.

Wishkah will hit the court again on Tuesday at Mary M. Knight.

AMANDA PARK — Kaylee Sowle and her 27 points were too much for Lake Quinault’s girls as the Elks fell to Mary M. Knight in a Coastal 1B League matchup.

Lake Quinault’s offense struggled to find consistency on offense beyond its 20-point ourburst in the second quarter.

“It was a good, close game for most of the game until we had to foul at the end and they hit some free throws,” Lake Quinault coach Travis Carstensen said. “We weren’t strong at the line and we definitely need to work on free throws before our next game.”

Jaylah Tatro was solid offensively for the Elks with 17 points.

The Elks (0-1, 3-3) will play their next game against Oakville today.

Wolves 48, Bobcats 38

TUMWATER — Black Hills pulled away in the second half to beat Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference contest Friday night at Tumwater.

The Wolves led by only one, 24-23, at the half, but limited the Bobcats to five points in the third quarter.

“Give Black Hills credit, they did a good job of getting up into our guards,” Aberdeen coach Mark Buckman said. “We were happy we were able to hold a Black Hills team known for its offense to 48 points (but) there’s no doubt our effort in the second half wasn’t quite as spirited as it was in the first half.”

Ben Dublanko scored 16 points to pace Aberdeen. Derrell Shale grabbed 13 rebounds and Jeshua Manwell eight for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen (0-2, 2-9) returns home Tuesday to face Chehalis.

TAHOLAH — Taholah’s boys came out strong and were able to put it in cruise control for most of the game in their 73-48 home win over North River on Friday.

James Orozco led Taholah with 15 points.

“Everyone played about two quarters and everyone played well,” Taholah coach Mike Rose said. “We moved the ball well and played good defense.”

Luis Nieves led North River with 25 points.

Taholah (2-0, 6-3) will put its undefeated league record on the line at Lake Quinault on Tuesday. North River (1-1 in league) hosts Oakville on Tuesday.

AMANDA PARK – Lake Quinault’s boys could not close the gap in the fourth quarter in their home loss to Mary M. Knight.

The Elks played evenly with the Owls in the first half but found themselves down heading into the fourth quarter.

Turnovers stalled their offense while jump starting Mary M. Knights and the Owls pulled away while the Elks were forced to foul.

Lake Quinault head coach Christian Garcia said this was still the best he’s seen his team play.

“This is the first time I saw the guys go and compete no matter what the score was,” he said. “They really played as a team and gave a great effort.”

The Elks (0-1, 0-5) will try to bounce back in its game Taholah on Tuesday.

WISHKAH – Oakville overwhelmed inexperienced Wishkah in a Coastal 1B League contest Friday at Brian Eager Memorial Gym.

The Loggers are playing this season with five freshmen and two eighth graders. Joey Brenneman led Wishkah with eight rebounds, while Hunter Wilbur and Skylor Boggs had three steals apiece.

“Our boys never gave up and played hard,” Wishkah coach Stefanie Baltzell said. “This will be a year of learning and growing as players. It’s tough to compete at this level with young, inexperienced players. I commend Oakville’s performance. They have a good team.”

The Loggers (0-2 in league) visit Mary M. Knight on Tuesday.
